They have few socially orientated hobbies, little civic or cultural engagement with society, and may have very limited social networks. Wellcome Trust-funded scientists at UCL have shown that working as a piano tuner may lead to changes in the structure of the memory and navigation areas of the brain. The study, published today in the Journal of Neuroscience , shows that these structural differences correlate with the number of years of experience a piano tuner has accumulated.

Can ’serious games’ be an effective tool for workplace learning?
Researchers from UCL are analysing a serious game called TARGET to see if it could help workers develop skills such as negotiating and trust-building in the workplace. Serious games are video games designed for a primary purpose other than pure entertainment. A collaborative project between 17 partners, including UCL, TARGET aims to use the Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) environment provided by the game to support the development of workers.

Even a moderate increase in exercise when you are in your fifties can help your heart health according to a study published today by researchers from UCL Epidemiology and Public Health. The study shows inflammation in the body - which is thought to contribute to heart disease - remains lower in people in the transition to retirement who embrace an active lifestyle, with at least 2.5 hours a week of moderate physical activity (enough to raise your heart rate), than in those who stay less active.

People with mental health problems have a lower life expectancy, according to a large-scale population based study published today in the British Medical Journal . The findings may prompt further research into the way doctors treat patients with even mild psychological problems. A team of researchers from UCL and the University of Edinburgh analysed data from over 68,000 adults aged 35 years and over who took part in the Health Survey for England from 1994 to 2004.
