UCL Alumnus wins Olympic Silver

UCL alumnus Rob Williams (BSc Biotechnology 2006), together with his GB teammates, was awarded a silver medal in the lightweight men's four rowing final of the London Olympics on 2 July. The rowers missed out on a gold medal by just a quarter of a second, falling slightly behind South Africa. Denmark were awarded a bronze medal for their efforts. Speaking to the BBC, Williams commented: "It's a tough event. We wanted to win. We have to be happy to get a medal at our home Olympics. It's a shame we didn't win, but what can you do? We did everything we could." After completing his undergraduate degree at UCL, Williams went on to work towards a PhD at the Institute of Structural and Molecular Biology, a joint institute between UCL and Birkbeck, which he recently completed.
