UCL launches its first Disability Equality Action Plan

Our Dismantling Ableism at UCL: Disability Equality Action Plan sets out practical actions to be delivered over the next three years, helping to embed disability equality in UCL’s policies, processes and everyday practice.

Dismantling Ableism at UCL: Disability Equality Action Plan is UCL’s first formal Disability Action Plan, and marks an important step in strengthening our commitment to creating an inclusive environment where Disabled and Neurodivergent staff and students can participate fully and thrive.

The plan was developed by the Disability Equality Implementation Group (DEIG), which was established in December 2023 in response to recommendations from the Eugenics Inquiry Response Group, and priorities were shaped by the Disability Equality Steering Group.

About the plan

With a commitment of £1.8 million in funding to support delivery over the three-year period, the plan sets out practical actions to help embed disability equality in UCL’s policies, processes and everyday practice and is focussed on four key areas:

  • Culture - building understanding of disability inclusion and challenging ableism across the institution
  • Students - improving the experience and outcomes of Disabled and Neurodivergent students
  • Staff - supporting recruitment, development and wellbeing for Disabled and Neurodivergent staff
  • Reasonable adjustments - improving the consistency, accessibility and effectiveness of adjustments for both staff and students
