Iron infusion before bowel surgery reduces need for blood transfusion
Change in clinical practice would have clear benefits for patients undergoing major bowel surgery, according to analysis conducted by researchers from UCL and the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital. The study, published in The British Journal of Surgery , provides evidence that giving iron intravenously before colorectal surgery improves outcomes for patients, reducing the need for blood transfusion by 33%.

The UK soft drinks industry levy, which was introduced in 2018, may have reduced the number of under 18s having a tooth removed due to tooth decay by 12%, finds a new study co-authored by a UCL researcher. The research, published in BMJ Nutrition, Prevention & Health , found that the largest reductions were in children aged up to nine years old and estimated that more than 5,500 hospital admissions for tooth extraction may have been prevented each year.

Digging new ponds and resurrecting old "ghost ponds" can be done by landowners to revitalise biodiversity in natural and farmland landscapes, say UCL researchers in a new how-to guide for turning degraded ponds into thriving ecosystems. The manual, developed by the UCL Pond Restoration Research Group in conjunction with the Freshwater Habitats Trust and Norfolk Ponds Project, is designed to help landowners, farmers and other stewards of the land to manage existing ponds, restore degraded ponds and determine the best ways to create new ones.
