UCL Saturday School expands Horizons of London teenagers

For the next eight months starting on Saturday 6 November, 100 Year Ten students from 30 inner London state schools will be spending their Saturday mornings at UCL. The teenagers, most of whom come from families with no history of higher education and many of whom are from ethnic minorities, will take short courses in humanities and science subjects, learning to solve problems, work in teams and present their ideas. Term One includes modules in debating, archaeology, Shakespeare's Measure for Measure and an introduction to medicine. Many lessons are taught by UCL staff, and the teenagers are supported throughout the year by UCL student ambassadors who act as role models and mentors. This is second year the Saturday School has run following its launch in Autumn 2009. The Saturday School is part of Horizons, an innovative pilot project run by UCL Outreach and funded by JPMorgan. Horizons aims to raise students? achievement at GCSE and to expand their higher education and future career aspirations.
