A state-of-the-art home for the Institute of Communications Studies will be officially opened this week by University of Leeds Vice-Chancellor Professor Michael Arthur.
The new £4.4m building is one of the best student media complexes in the country with 41 edit suites, a newsroom, TV and radio studios and a 60 seat cinema. The building covers just over 3,000 square metres and includes 71 staff offices, as well as dedicated study rooms for Masters and PhD students. Professor Michael Arthur will attend the official opening of the ICS building on 19 January, which will be marked with a ribbon cutting ceremony and the unveiling of a plaque. Guests will also be invited to view a sample of students' work. The ICS is one of the largest departments of its kind in Europe, and an internationally renowned centre for teaching and research in communications, media and culture. Professor Arthur said: "This fantastic facility is a magnificent addition to our great campus. It emphasises our commitment to excellence in learning and teaching and maintaining the world-class standards of education our students expect and deserve." David Hesmondhalgh, Head of Institute of Communications Studies and Professor of Media and Music Industries, said: "This brilliant new building will be a wonderful home for hard-working staff and students, and will enhance the Institute's reputation as an outstanding place to work and study." The Institute offers four undergraduate programs in the areas of Broadcast Journalism, Cinema and Photography, Communications and New Media, as well as postgraduate taught degrees and a postgraduate research programme.
