Tribute to Professor Dame Georgina Mace CBE

It is with extreme sadness that we announce the passing of Professor Dame Georgina Mace CBE on 19th September 2020. Georgina joined UCL in 2012 as the founding Director of the Centre for Biodiversity and Environment Research, where she continued to make unparalleled contributions to the science needed to underpin the conservation of biodiversity. Her research revolutionised the measurement of our impacts on nature to reveal the magnitude and pattern of biodiversity loss, and its consequences for humans. The rigour and candour with which Georgina addressed these issues was key to convincing governments of the urgency of stemming biodiversity loss, and of nature's critical role in development and in social justice. She is known globally for her leading role in the process to develop, test and document criteria for listing species on the IUCN's Red List of threatened species, and was a member of the UK Government's Natural Capital Committee, and of the Natural Environment Research Council. Before being named Dame of the British Empire in 2016 for services to science, Georgina was elected Fellow of the Royal Society in 2002, and was the 2007 winner of the International Cosmos prize. She is a past president of the British Ecological Society and the Society for Conservation Biology.
