Across UCL and Students’ Union UCL, we are excited to introduce another strand of ExtendED Learning , a UCL initiative designed to offer you a unique, interactive learning experience with a focus on practical skills, such as teamwork, negotiation, listening and quick thinking.
The Supercharge Your Career strand is delivered by a range of departments, including the Careers team. Activities in this strand are designed to develop hands-on skills to apply to your career planning and preparation, while building your networks and professional confidence.
These activities span a wide range of topics and specific focuses - there is something here for everyone to benefit from. Whether you want to hone your computing skills, develop your awareness of global career mindsets, or get your hands dirty with stage crew training, there is plenty on offer to learn from. Maybe you’d like to try all’of the above!
Our flagship event in this programme is the Careers Skills Summit on Monday 2 June, where you will collaborate in interdisciplinary groups to solve problems from the working world. You might be able to try out some of the skills gained from the networking practice session with a range of UCL alumni taking place on Monday 19 May.
Other opportunities running on various dates will include:
Working on nano consultancy projects set by external organisations ( find out more at our information session )
- Experiencing hands-on training on digital skill experiences, such as High Performance Computing and Docker Containers
- Participating in a design sprint
- Engaging with objects from the UCL Museums in a new, analytical way.
For the full list please visit the main ExtendEdD learning page.
These events and activities are open to all taught students and will bring you together with people from across UCL to extend your learning outside of the classroom.
Sound good? Here’s what others have said
Ismael, a Nano projects participant from the 2024 cohort reflects on the benefit to their industry awareness and specific skill development:"I would highly recommend participating in the Nano Consulting group project to any peer. Leading a team of four students, including myself, provided invaluable insights into the consulting world and honed my leadership and teamwork skills.
"Additionally, the opportunity to interact with an actual company was particularly rewarding, as it allowed us to apply our theoretical knowledge to real-world challenges and receive direct feedback from industry professionals. This experience has significantly enhanced my understanding of consulting practices and has been instrumental in my personal and professional growth."
Previous cohorts who have attended the Working in a Global World workshops have commented on the practical learning, and the combination of insights and reflections. One recent participant shared their impressions:
"Catherine is highly skilled at blending theory/research and practice, which makes the session not just an engaging one but also one immediately applicable to life."
Speaking with alumni can be a great way to build up your confidence in networking with industry professionals - after all, they were in your position not too long ago. Come to our alumni networking event on Monday 19 May to practice your conversation skills - previous attendees cited this event as helpful and opening up how they think about networking. One participant said:
’’It’s my first time networking. I think the event changed my fate. Thank you so much!’’
