Plymouth welcomes new Deputy Vice-Chancellors

Professor Raymond Playford will join the University from the University of Tasmania where he is Dean of the Faculty of Health Science, while Professor David Coslett will take up the position from his current role as Plymouth’s Pro Vice-Chancellor and Dean of Arts. Professor Playford previously held the position of Professor of Medicine at Barts and the London School of Medicine and Dentistry in addition to being Vice Principal at Queen Mary, University of London. Professor Playford is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians, the Royal College of Pathologists and the Academy of Medical Sciences with specialty training and clinical practice in gastroenterology. He was also previously Chairman of the Education Committee of the British Society of Gastroenterology, Associate Editor of the Journal Gut and a member of several medical research advisory boards and expert panels. His specialist research interests include mechanisms of repair, growth factors and the interface between food and medicines and he has had over 100 research papers published. On his appointment, Professor Playford commented: “As an academic leader, teacher and medical clinician, I am committed to furthering a student centred, research focused approach to education. Plymouth is becoming renowned on a global platform for its life changing health, medical and marine research and I am excited about playing a key role in the University and further developing Plymouth’s international standing.
