New Director announced for UCL Inclusive Environment

Pip Jackson took up the new role of Director of Inclusive Environment on 7 January 2025

Pip has been working to remove barriers to access and inclusion as Head of Inclusive Environment for the last five years. During this time, she led a three-year consultation process talking to our community and listening to your experiences of studying and working on campus. This consultation helped UCL identify where we need to be more accessible and inclusive, and supported the publication of our Inclusive Environments Policy , the first of its kind to be agreed at an institutional level.

Since December 2023, Pip has been the driving force behind the Inclusive Environments Action Plan , bringing together colleagues from across UCL to ensure our students and staff feel respected, supported and enabled to do their best work. The action plan covers everything from our estates related policies, processes and ways of working, to our buildings, facilities and equipment. It includes:

working with our fire team to support our staff and students with Personal Emergency Evacuation Plans ,

Beyond UCL’s campuses, Pip contributes to the development of resources and regularly works with other higher education institutions to share knowledge and experience and to influence the sector in terms of inclusive design; feeds into consultations to influence inclusive design standards and regulations at national, regional, and local levels; and sits on several committees and panels such as the British Standards Institute and Built Environment Access panel.

Ian Dancy, UCL’s Executive Director of Operations said:

" I’m delighted that Pip Jackson has now been appointed as our new Director of Inclusive Environments. Pip has been an energetic champion of accessibility at UCL for the last five years and I’m excited that she will now be asked to both grow our Inclusive Environment team, following additional investment from within Estates, and accelerate and amplify our plans. I know Pip will continue to work with the community, who she deeply cares for and works hard to serve.

Professor Alison Koslowski, UCL’s Pro Provost (Equity & Inclusion), said:

" I’m thrilled that we’ve been able to appoint Pip Jackson as our first Director of Inclusive Environments. It is such a crucial role as we build capacity across the organisation to embed a barrier-free experience as standard for all’users of UCL spaces. We are lucky to have someone with Pip’s knowledge and expertise shape this role.

Pip said:

" The opportunity to grow and expand the Inclusive Environments team is an exciting time. There is much to be done, I have always acknowledged that, and by bringing in more technical expertise we can speed up the rate of progress. For me this role is not a job it is a passion, and I cannot wait for what the next few years hold. I look forward to the challenge and working with dedicated Estates colleagues to create change.
