Happy Bisexual Awareness Week to bisexual staff, students, and alumni at UCL!

Foreword from Tom Glynn, Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Manager

Bisexual Awareness Week is a time of annual celebration and reflection. As someone who identifies under the ’bi umbrella’, I’ve seen stark differences over the years in how I was perceived and treated depending on how open I’ve been about my sexuality, or the gender of my partner. This unfortunately isn’t a unique experience, and many individuals who identify as bisexual will have their own stories of marginalization or shifting assumptions of privilege depending on how people (correctly or not) label them.

That is why it is so important to celebrate the diversity of the LGTBQ+ community and recognise the sometimes ’silent B’, which you can explore more with the resources below. I’d also recommend a TEDXOshkosh talk - Bisexuality: The Invisible Letter "B" .

Show your allyship this week and beyond by recognising and challenging your assumptions, and supporting anyone in the UCL community who may be experiencing biphobia. Consider whether the language you use could be made more inclusive, and let’s work together to uplift and support marginalised bi people. Happy Bisexual Awareness week!

Bisexual Awareness Week takes place every year from 16-23 September, ending in Bisexual Visibility Day on 23 September. Since 1999, Bi Visibility Day has been held to raise bi awareness, challenge preconceived stereotypes of bisexual people and celebrate the diversity of the LGBTQ+ community.
