Main Quad Access Restricted from Saturday, 20 September

UCL Estates is upgrading central campus spaces as we approach UCL’s 200th anniversary in 2026. Here’s how it affects access to the Main Quad from September 2025.

As part of UCL’s Bicentennial Physical Legacy Works , access to the Main Quad via Gower Street will be restricted from Saturday, 20 September 2025 until January 2026, when These essential works are part of a major transformation to improve our campus in celebration of UCL’s 200th anniversary.

Who can still access the Main Quad:

Access will be limited to those heading to buildings or spaces that can only be reached via the Main Quad, including:
  • North-West Wing
  • Slade School of Fine Art
  • Housman Room
  • Physics Building
  • Kathleen Lonsdale Building (accessible entrance)
  • Chadwick

Accessible routes within the Quad to these spaces will remain open to support wheelchair users and others with mobility needs.

Alternative routes:

If you’re visiting areas like the Main Library, Jeremy Bentham Room, Refectory, Wilkins Terrace, Garden Room, South Junction or South Wing, please use entrances via Gordon Street (next to the UCL Student Centre ) or Malet Place (enter next to Roberts Building ).

Directional signage will be in place. If anyone needs additional assistance onsite, please refer to the Campus Experience team (or speak with a student ambassador during the Welcome period) who will be available to help.

Emergency protocol:

Emergency access has been carefully planned. The fire route down the Portico will remain accessible from the Main Library, staff and students in the South Junction will evacuate via Malet Place, and users in buildings still accessible via the Quad will evacuate using the current protocol of dispersal. Fire brigade access points will remain fully operational throughout the works.
