Launch of new ’Toilets at UCL’ webpage

UCL launches a new webpage to help staff and students find toilet facilities across campus.

UCL Inclusive Environments has recently undertaken an audit of toilet facilities across the UCL estate to identify and prioritise buildings without wheelchair accessible and universal toilets for future refurbishments. Toilets are key amenities in buildings, and ensuring equitable facilities are available in all buildings is a key part of UCL’s ongoing commitment to make campus more accessible and inclusive for everyone.

This audit has led the Inclusive Environments team to launch a new webpage that brings together clear, standardised information on toilet facilities across all’UCL buildings. Developed with the Digital Accessibility team, the Toilets at UCL webpage has been designed to be as accessible and user friendly as possible.

Staff and students, particularly those who are disabled and trans, have consistently asked for toilet locations to be provided to enable them to more easily plan their use of campus spaces and to reduce anxiety about finding suitable facilities. Event organisers have also requested this page to help them choose more accessible, inclusive venues and share key information with attendees, supporting UCL’s commitment to embedding accessibility and inclusion in all’activities. This new webpage reflects the needs identified by our community, and early feedback has been very positive.

One staff member said, "As someone who is disabled and non-binary, I’m bookmarking the heck out of this. I have severe anxiety in buildings I don’t know and not knowing the location of accessible bathrooms scares the living heck out of me. This will save me a lot of anxious moments!"

What the New Webpage Includes

  • Overview of  toilet types available at UCL, including accessible, gendered and universal (all-gender) options.
  • A breakdown of  toilet facilities by building , helping users quickly locate what they need.

This webpage provides clear information on UCL’s approach to toilet provision, reflecting our commitment to meeting diverse needs. It brings together details on the types of toilets available across UCL, the facilities in each building, and includes a downloadable summary of UCL’s overall provision.

The key feature of the page is an alphabetical list of all buildings at UCL, with a listing of the toilets available and the floors they can be found on. The webpage can be navigated using the alphabetical listing and accompanying anchor links along the top or can be searched using ’Control + F’.

Types of Toilets Explained

The categories on the webpage are listed below, noting that letters in brackets correspond to the UK’s Building Regulations Approved Document T :

  • Universal (U) - all-gender toilets with individual cubicles
  • Female (F)
  • Male (M)
  • Universal ambulant (UA) - all-gender toilets with grabrails for ambulant disabled people
  • Female ambulant (FA)
  • Male ambulant (MA)
  • Wheelchair accessible (WC)
  • Changing Places (CP) - wheelchair accessible toilets with hoists (RADAR key required)

Future Developments

A separate webpage is being developed to provide detailed dimensions and usage information for wheelchair-accessible toilets across UCL, supporting improved planning and accessibility for disabled staff, students and visitors. Once this work is complete, the current "Toilet provision at UCL" document (now available as a download on the same page) will be converted into its own webpage.

This content will continue to evolve in response to user feedback and the enhanced functionality made possible by UCL’s move to Drupal 10. As new capabilities become available, we’ll continue to update the content and increase usability to better support our community.
