The sacred songs and rhythms of Morocco and Burkina Faso will be bringing some musical sunshine to the Botanic Garden at the first Sounds Green cushion concert tonight, 6.15pm start. The trio met in 2009, and have developed a fusion of sacred Gnawa songs and rhythms" Gnawa Yinga is a collaboration between a trio of musical masters. Simo Lagnawi specialises in guembri, a three stringed plucked lute about the size of a guitar, and the qraqeb, steel castanets used by the Gnawa of Morocco for entertainment, special events and ritual ceremonies. Percussion comes from djembe master, Abdoulaye Sanfo, with Alain Rouamba on the dundun and calabash. The trio met in 2009, and have developed a fusion of sacred Gnawa songs and rhythms with Burkina Faso songs and dance rhythms that revisit and rework traditional folk tales of Gnawa wisdom. Gnawa Yinga is the first of the series of four Sounds Green open air cushion concert proms brought to the Botanic Garden by the Cambridge Summer Music Festival every Wednesday this July. Each one starts at 6.15pm and offers an hour of vibrant music in glorious surroundings.
