Researchers at the University of Glasgow have discovered the behaviour and metabolism of young trout is affected by where the egg they hatched from rested in the ovaries of their mother. Female brown trout produce many hundreds of apparently identical eggs each time they spawn. A new paper published today (Wednesday November 28) in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B by a team from the University's Institute of Biodiversity, Animal Health and Comparative Medicine shows there are subtle differences between her offspring depending on where each egg rested in the ovaries.

University of Glasgow scientists have helped to create silicon optical chips to generate twisted beams of light which could be used to manipulate tiny particles or increase the capacity of optical technology. A recent paper published in the journal Science outlines how an international research team involving the Universities of Glasgow and Bristol, along with colleagues at the Universities of Sun Yat-Sen and Fudan in China, have demonstrated integrated arrays of 'optical vortex beams' on a silicon chip.
