University celebrates Catalan ties
On 7 November the University of Glasgow hosted a day of events to celebrate the close ties shared between the University of Glasgow, the Institute Ramon Llull in Barcelona, and FC Barcelona. The events coincided with Celtic's Champions League fixture against FC Barcelona, which Celtic won 2-1, rounding off a successful day for Scottish sport and culture. The day included started with two well attended lectures in the Bute Hall, given by Carles Vilarrubí, Vice-President of FC Barcelona, and Catalan-based journalist Matthew Tree. Later in the afternoon the University hosted a meeting of FC Barcelona Supporters Clubs, chaired by Jimmy Burns, which attracted FC Barcelona fans from across the UK. To complement the events in the Bute Hall, the University's Queen Margaret Union hosted a concert by renowned Catalan band Els Amics de les Arts, which was attended by many fans who travelled to Glasgow for the evening's game.
