The event, to be held in Berlin, coincides with the 10th anniversary celebrations of the Gates Cambridge Trust, set up in 2000 and funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to provide scholarships to outstanding international graduate students with an interest in social transformation. Keynote speakers are Lord Wilson of Dinton, Master of Emmanuel College and a leading former British civil servant, who will speak about the relationship between the Civil Service and politics in the UK, and Peter Ammon, State Secretary of the Federal Foreign Office in Germany, who will talk about leadership in the diplomatic service in turbulent times. The event begins with a dinner on 16th April, followed on the 17th by a one-day conference, hosted by the Bertelsmann Representative Office in Berlin, and ends on the 18th with a cultural programme. It has been organised by teleconference by three Gates alumni - Dirk-Hinrich Haar, Oliver Fischer and Moncef Tanfour - with support from the Gates Scholars Alumni Association and the Gates Cambridge Trust. All three had expressed an interest separately in setting up a Gates alumni network in Europe. Tanfour is the regional coordinator for Gates alumni in Europe. Thirty alumni from Germany, the UK, Switzerland, Denmark and France will take part in the event which the three organisers hope will launch regular alumni events on the continent.
