Consumer protection law at UCL: An update

Training and guidance are available for staff on how to provide information about UCL’s degree programmes to prospective and current students.

UCL is required by law to provide prospective students with accurate and clear information about what and where they will study, how and where they will be taught and what is expected of them.

Over the summer, we have been working to improve our guidance for staff on providing information to both prospective students and current students. This is designed to ensure that UCL is compliant with consumer protection legislation.

This is likely to be of interest to you if your role involves:
  • Acting as Programme Lead on any UCL degree programme
  • Marketing and communication in Faculties or VP Offices
  • Student recruitment activity
  • Access and Widening Participation activity
  • Admissions activity
  • Recruitment events activity, for example Open Days (includes Student Ambassadors)
  • Any other activity that involves providing information about degree programmes to prospective students.

NEW: Consumer Protection Law Procedure

The Academic Manual Consumer Protection Law Procedure sets out the guiding principles of how consumer protection law applies in the UCL context (for example, what information needs to be supplied and when). This includes guidance and examples for staff if changes are made to a degree programme after the offer stage.

More resources are available on the consumer protection pages for staff.

Training

To find out more about the type of information that should be provided, please complete the Students’ Consumer Rights training module. You can also search for the course in Learn Upon. This training is encouraged for anyone involved with communicating with prospective students.
