Apollo 10 moment for the Large Hadron Collider

The University of Glasgow is to formally launch its policy for student carers, the first of its kind for a UK university, at an event on Tuesday 6th December. The policy was instigated and developed by the University's Students' Representative Council (GUSRC). The Student Carers' Policy supports students who, at any point during their studies at the University, provide emotional or practical support to a relative, close friend, or neighbour, who is unable to manage alone. Also contained is guidance for University staff who have a role in advising or supporting students who already are or who anticipate becoming carers. There are over 600,000 carers in Scotland and for many people taking on a caring role can mean facing a life of poverty, isolation, frustration, ill health and depression. Public Health Minister Michael Matheson MSP, who will speak at Tuesday's launch, said; "It is important to remember that many students are carers and therefore need support to balance their responsibilities with academic studies. I welcome the University of Glasgow's development of this policy, which will help carers fulfil their own aspirations and ambitions as well as meeting the needs of their loved ones." GUSRC's Vice President for Student Support, Amy Johnson said; "Every year GUSRC's Advice Centre deals with cases involving students who are having difficulties fulfilling dual roles as a student and a carer.
