Vice-Chancellor elected to American Academy
Professor Andrew Hamilton, Oxford's Vice-Chancellor, has been elected to join one of America's most prestigious honorary societies and a centre for independent policy research. The American Academy of Arts & Sciences today announced its election of 211 new Fellows and 19 Foreign Honorary Members who represent the sciences, humanities, arts, business, public affairs, and non-profit sectors. They represent more than 100 institutions from 26 states and 10 countries. Those selected this year are scholars, scientists, jurists, writers, artists, civic, corporate, and philanthropic leaders and include winners of the Nobel, Pulitzer, and Shaw Prizes; MacArthur and Guggenheim fellows; and Grammy, Tony, and Oscar Award winners. Professor Hamilton has been elected as a Foreign Honorary Member for his work in chemistry. Since moving to Oxford from Yale he has continued to actively pursue his research into the use of synthetic design for the understanding, mimicry and potential disruption of biological processes. Professor Hamilton said of his research: 'It gives me an outlet for my scientific interests and helps me keep my sanity in the complex world of university administration.
