University of Sussex submits appeal against planning decision
The University of Sussex is today (Friday 12 December) submitting its appeal against the local council’s rejection of a planning application to modernise the campus.
The University announced last month that it intended to appeal against a decision by Brighton & Hove City Council’s planning committee in June, when councillors turned down an outline application for the University’s masterplan.
The masterplan , which represents a potential £500 million investment in the local economy, provides a framework for the future development of campus and includes:
- New state-of-the-art academic and research facilities
- 2,500 new student rooms on campus and facilities to support this expansion
- Preservation of architect Sir Basil Spence’s famous listed buildings and surrounding landscape.
The Planning Inspectorate, a government agency that deals with all planning appeals, will assess the University’s appeal. A public hearing is likely to take place in spring 2015 and a decision is expected by summer 2015.
If the Planning Inspectorate grants permission for the masterplan, the University will then need to make detailed applications for different buildings before work can start.
