The Ten Tors Orchestra - The Making of Plymouth Minster
Celebrating St Andrew and the making of Plymouth Minster will be performed by the Ten Tors Orchestra on Saturday, to mark the Bishop of Exeter’s bestowal of the title upon the Plymouth church as part of the 1100th anniversary of the Diocese. The concert programme will tie in with the story of St Andrew and his links with Scotland, Turkey and, of course, the city of Plymouth. It opens with a Scottish fiddle tune by Sally Beamish, Day Dawn , followed by Mozart’s Violin Concerto No.5, which is sometimes nicknamed ‘ the Turkish Concerto’ . The advent prayer Ave Maria , set by Plymouth composer Clive Jenkins, marks St Andrew’s Day, the nearest Sunday to Advent. While The Early Train by the same composer reflects the Plymouth Blitz of 1941 - ‘catching the early train’ being a euphemism for premature death. Haydn’s Symphony No 49, The Passion , reminds us of the Christian context of the event and respects St Andrew’s martyrdom, while Mozart’s Exsultate Jubilate rounds off the piece. In addition to this performance delivered by the South West’s lauded Ten Tors Orchestra, the audience will also be treated to performances by violinist Leland Chen and soprano Nicki Kennedy.
