Plymouth University submits bid to host Turner Prize 2015

The University is putting forward its iconic Roland Levinsky Building as the venue for the show and has submitted an innovative plan that would see teaching and learning integrated into the event. The bid has the backing of Sir Richard Carew Pole, who is a Deputy Lieutenant of Cornwall and a Trustee of Tate St Ives, and will be supported by partners across the City including media company TwoFour. The Turner Prize, which features the work of four shortlisted artists, alternates on a yearly basis from its home at the Tate Gallery in London and a guest venue. In 2013, it is being held in Londonderry, and members of the Plymouth team have already travelled to Ireland to meet the organizers and learn about their successful bid. Associate Professor, Fine Art Phil Power, who is co-leading the University’s bid, said: “We want Plymouth to be a leading urban space for contemporary art, and there is the potential here to establish the Roland Levinsky Building as a world-renowned venue. “We have this huge artistic gap in the South West, spanning Bristol to Newlyn and St Ives. Plymouth is a big city, and there is absolutely no reason why we shouldn’t be positioning it as a city of culture for the future.
