Glasgow launches joint engineering programme with UESTC, China

The University of Glasgow and the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China (UESTC) have launched a jointly-delivered engineering programme. The two institutions will offer a four-year BEng (Honours) in Electronic and Electrical Engineering delivered at UESTC's Qingshuihe campus in Chengdu, Sichuan with around 200 students starting in September 2013. Graduates will receive degrees from both universities. UESTC is renowned as the birthplace of the national electronics industry in China and is one of the institutions chosen by the Chinese Government to be developed as one of the country's top 100 universities. The collaboration further strengthens Glasgow's links with UESTC which began in 2009 with joint research and student mobility activity, and will enhance the University's reputation in China. It will also create a base for greater research collaboration with local industry in the province, which has already seen Glasgow license patented microwave ignition technology for engines to Sichuan Dehong Electronics Technologies Company. Future development work on the technology is planned with UESTC which could see the technology, which increases the efficiency of motor engines by up to 50%, made available commercially.
