Obesity is an important contributor to premature death in women who have never smoked, especially among women in low income groups, according to research published on BMJ.com. While established research has shown clearly that smoking is linked to premature death and health inequalities, it is not known which causes of death are related to the social position of women who have never smoked, says the paper.

Diabetes risk associated with heart medication
A new University of Glasgow study has found that medication commonly prescribed for people with heart problems can put them at an increased risk of developing diabetes. The study, which appears in the current edition of JAMA, the Journal of the American Medical Association, shows that patients receiving high doses of statin therapy for cardiovascular problems are 12% more likely to develop diabetes than those receiving lesser doses.

Historians from the University of Glasgow have found evidence to show that, as far as the English were concerned, Scots patriot and hero William Wallace aspired to be King of Scotland. A newly discovered English source, which also marks the earliest record of Wallace's gruesome execution, confirms outright what historians had only suspected before: the reason that Edward I dealt so harshly with Wallace was that he viewed him as a pretender to the Scottish crown.
