Dazzling first images from Vera C. Rubin Observatory
The newly released first images from the Vera C. Rubin Observatory in Chile mark the start of a ten-year mission involving UCL researchers to create an ultra-high-definition time-lapse record of the Universe and help to pin down what dark energy might be. The observatory is named in honour of a trailblazing US astronomer who discovered evidence for dark matter.

’Ultimate discovery machine’: Euclid releases first batch of data
The first batch of survey data from the European Space Agency's Euclid space telescope, whose massive visible-light camera was built by a UCL-led team, includes more than 380,000 galaxies catalogued thanks to a combination of artificial intelligence and citizen science efforts. Covering a huge area of the sky in three mosaics, the data release also includes numerous galaxy clusters, active galactic nuclei and 500 gravitational lens candidates - cases where light from distant galaxies has been bent and distorted by normal and dark matter in the foreground.

Massive black hole in the early universe spotted taking a ’nap’ after overeating
Scientists have spotted a massive black hole in the early universe that is 'napping' after stuffing itself with too much food. Like a bear gorging itself on salmon before hibernating for the winter, or a much-needed nap after Christmas dinner, this black hole has overeaten to the point that it is lying dormant in its host galaxy.
