The University of Birmingham has launched an Online PGCert Design for Learning Environments to meet the industry demand for professionals who can design effective, innovative and learner-focused digital education programmes.
COVID-19 has been a catalyst for growth within the online education sector, which even pre-pandemic, was already forecast to be worth an estimated $350 billion by 2025. Due to increased investment - which is expected to triple in the next decade - online education delivery is also becoming more sophisticated, incorporating exciting new technologies and teaching methods which require specialist knowledge to implement effectively.
The Online PGCert Design for Learning Environments takes a holistic approach to the subject area and will quickly expose students to the knowledge and skillset they need to design and evaluate learning environments in a variety of contexts, making it the ideal programme for those looking to progress their career in a range of sectors, including education and corporate training.
During the 12-month part-time course, students will learn across a range of disciplines, including computing, social sciences, education, technology and design. They will also cover key, contemporary topics within online instructional design, such as design thinking, perspectives on learning and applied data science for learning environments, while also, through assessment, build a portfolio of work which they can showcase once they have completed their studies.
And for those individuals not wishing to commit to the full programme, students can instead opt to study individual modules from the programme with Online Short Courses in Design for Learning Environments , enabling them to upskill in specific areas of digital learningdesign in just 8 weeks. Each short course is worth a total of ten postgraduate credits, which can be used towards the full PGCert at a later date, if desired.
The programme welcomed its first cohort in spring 2021 and has entry requirements that are based on both formal qualifications and relevant work experience.
