Professor Sue Rogers appointed as interim Director of the Institute of Education

Professor Becky Francis steps down from her role as Director of the IOE on Thursday 9 January, to take up the role of CEO at the Education Endowment Foundation. Professor Sue Rogers has been appointed Interim Director of the IOE.

Professor Rogers will serve until Professor Francis’s substantive replacement is recruited. Interviews for the substantive replacement will take place in February 2020, and it is envisaged that the new Director will be in post for summer/autumn 2020.

Sue has served as Pro-Director Academic Development at the IOE since January 2016, responsible for the day-to-day line-management of the IOE’s Heads of Department, working with them on the strategic development of its academic activities, academic staff development and wellbeing, and equalities and diversity and HR matters. Sue first joined the IOE in 2006, and during her time there has also been head of two departments.

Professor Francis said: "It has been a real honour to lead the IOE and champion its vitally important work in supporting education and our wider public services, and informing policy, practice and public understanding via our education and social research. Achievements have included completion of the immediate merger process with UCL; the first phase of the redevelopment of 20 Bedford Way; the launch of major new research centres on teachers and on education policy; the building of constructive relations with policy and practitioner communities, helping to put the IOE centre-stage with these our main audiences; and, within the IOE, a foregrounding of equality and diversity considerations. In terms of ’hard’ indicators of our success, we can cite the IOE’s continued number 1 ranking in the annual QS World University Rankings for Education (2014-). On a day-to-day basis it is easy to lose sight of the scale and significance of such achievements, but they provide firm foundations for the next phase of the IOE’s development. The IOE is very fortunate in having an exceptionally strong senior team that is able to step up to provide a seamless transition from me to my substantive replacement."

Professor Rogers said: "I’m delighted to be taking up the role of Interim Director of the IOE. I look forward to working with IOE colleagues to advance our mission, but also the strong equalities and diversity agenda that we have established for the faculty. I also look forward to working more closely with colleagues across UCL, in support of greater collaboration and cross-disciplinary research and teaching. On behalf of the IOE can I thank Becky for her outstanding, clear-sighted leadership and wish her well in her new role."

We wish Becky all the best in her important new role and look forward to working with Sue and colleagues as they continue the IOE’s important work.
