This lunchtime the new Principal and President, Professor Ed Byrne, was installed at the College’s Opening of Year Service. The service, marking the beginning of the academic year, is held annually on the first Wednesday of the new undergraduate term, with an academic procession and a distinguished visiting preacher. All Vice-Principals and Deans of Faculties, Departments and Divisions were invited to attend, and many robed and processed.

Professor Ed Byrne was presented by Mr Andrew Summers on behalf of the College Council, representing the Chairman, and he read the mandate from the Archbishop of Canterbury as the College Visitor. The Revd Canon Professor Richard Burridge FKC, Dean of King’s College London, installed Professor Byrne in the Principal’s Stall. The Principal and the Dean then installed Professor Edward Adams as Professor of New Testament, who was presented by Professor Paul Joyce, Samuel Davidson Professor of Old Testament/Hebrew Bible and Head of the Department of Theology & Religious Studies.

This year, the Rt Revd Nicholas Holtam AKC FKC, Bishop of Salisbury, who is a King’s alumnus ,addressed the congregation, discussing the role and purpose of universities and the values of the College. The choir sang Sancte et Sapienter, a special anthem based on the College Motto and College Prayer, commissioned by Stephen Harrow, former Assistant Registrar, and composed by the Organist of York Minster, Philip Moore. Sebastiaan Debrouwere, President of KCLSU and representative of the student body, read the first Bible reading (Job 28: 12-13, 20 & 23-28), followed by Professor Ed Byrne who read the second (1 Corinthians 2: 1-7, 12-13), both of which texts are inscribed on the Chapel walls.

Commenting on the service, the Dean said: ‘It was very good to see the Chapel full for today’s annual Beginning of the Academic Year Service, which is always an important occasion. It was particularly special to be able to install Professor Byrne into the Principal’s Stall, following the mandate from the Archbishop of Canterbury – and we are delighted to welcome him and his wife Melissa among us, and look forward to their time with us. I was also pleased that the Principal and I were then able to install Professor Eddie Adams in the Stall of the Professor of New Testament. We all greatly appreciated the Address from the Bishop of Salisbury and the challenge he gave us as an alumnus and Fellow to promote the distinctive values of King’s in the coming academic year.’

Professor Byrne said: ‘I am delighted to have been installed at today’s service. It was wonderful to be part of the service, with colleagues and students, marking the start of term.’

The Opening of Year Service at Guy’s Campus is scheduled to take place in the Chapel of Thomas Guy on Thursday 25 September at 17.30. The preacher will be the Very Revd Andrew Nunn, Dean of Southwark Cathedral.
