Mother-daughter duo graduate

A mother and daughter will graduate this week as the University celebrates the achievements of the class of 2023.

Angela Amey-Jones will collect her Post Graduate Certificate in Specialist Community Public Health Nursing, from the School of Healthcare Sciences, while her daughter Georgina, graduates from the Business School with a BSc in Business Management.

Angela said: "My graduation tells the story of lifelong learning. Having previously gained a University of Wales BA (Hons) in Design in 1996, in 2008 I decided on a career change and commenced a Midwifery Degree at Cardiff University, studying full time with three small children.

"I was awarded a First Class, Bachelor of Midwifery (Hons) from Cardiff University in 2011 as a mature student and have worked for Cardiff and Vale Health Board since. In September 2021 I returned to Cardiff University, on secondment from my role as a midwife, to study as a full-time student to complete a Post Graduate qualification."

Both Angela and Georgina undertook their studies during the pandemic.

Angela says: "Georgina started her studies during the height of the pandemic, but we were confident in Cardiff as her chosen university, reassured by my previous experience as a student at the University."

Georgina added: "Cardiff University was a great place to study business management. Through the Integrated Placement Programme, I was also able to gain industry experience, which has helped me secure a job quickly after graduation."

The family’s links with the University won’t end with this week, as Angela’s son starts a BSc in Zoology at the University in September.

"We are keeping the Cardiff University tradition in the family!" added Angela.
