Researchers from the University of Liverpool have found that the annual number of estimated number of norovirus cases annually in the UK is approximately 800,000 greater than previously estimated. Norovirus is the commonest cause of gastrointestinal disease across all age groups worldwide. The majority of cases experience a mild, self-limiting illness and few cases tend to consult primary healthcare.

Liverpool head and neck cancer research gets £200k boost
A research project, based out of the University, which will bring together a multidisciplinary team of cancer surgeons, medical oncologists and scientists in Liverpool, has been given the go ahead thanks to £200,000 worth of grant funding. North West Cancer Research (NWCR) has awarded funding for a three-year long project, which will look at the effectiveness of new cancer drug treatments for head and neck cancer patients.

New research conducted by the University in partnership with the universities of Gdansk and Manchester shows that current salt reduction strategy in England has failed to reduce existing inequalities in salt consumption, cardiovascular disease, and gastric cancer burdens. Excess salt consumption is associated with higher risk of cardiovascular disease and gastric cancer.

A new project is bringing together expertise from the Universities of Liverpool, Sheffield and Surrey to develop autonomous robots to tackle nuclear waste reduction. In collaboration with Sellafield Ltd and the National Nuclear Laboratory (NNL), the `Automated Robot Waste Processing? project will take novel research produced from EPSRC-funded `Reconfigurable Autonomy' project and apply it to demonstrate robotic systems autonomously recognising, manipulating, and storing items of decommissioning waste.
