AIAA Fellowship recognises Prof Gursul’s research into aerodynamics

Ismet Gursul, Professor of Aerospace Engineering, has been elected a Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA).

The body, the world’s largest aerospace technical society, is world-leading in aerospace engineering, science and research. It confirmed Prof Gursul in its 2023 intake of 28 new Fellows, announced this month. AIAA Fellows are the most respected names in the aerospace industry.

The AIAA cited Prof Gursul for his outstanding technical contributions in vortex-dominated flows and unsteady aerodynamics, and for sustained editorial contributions to the science of aeronautics.

Prof Gursul said: "-I am proud to be elected as an AIAA Fellow. This is the highest award in aerospace science and engineering community."

He will be inducted at a ceremony on Wednesday, 17 May, in Arlington, Virginia. The AIAA Awards Gala will celebrate the new Honorary Fellows and Fellows on Thursday, 18 May, at The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Washington, DC.

Prof Gursul is also a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society, Associate Editor of both the AIAA Journal and the Aeronautical Journal. He joined the University of Bath as a Reader of Aerospace Engineering in 1999.
