On 23 March 2017, Prof. Mikael Rask Madsen gave a talk at the Transnational Law Institute on "International Courts and the Making of Global Society." Prof. Madsen is a Professor of Law at the University of Copenhaguen and the Director of ICourts – the Centre of Excellence for International Courts. He has written extensively on the sociology and history of human rights. During his TLI talk, Prof. Madsen explained how the proliferation of international courts is impacting societies across the world. The talk first explained the rise of international courts since the beginning of the 20th century and then explored the tensions that this evolution produced in several instances, focusing in particular on the case of the European Court of Human Rights.
