Imperial underscored its position as a world-leading research institution with the formation of 15 spinouts and staff startups last year.
"A healthy crop of new spinouts shows Imperial’s commitment to its mission ’to be useful’," said Marika Reay , Cross-Faculty Commercialisation Director, Imperial College London. "With more than one spinout launched each month in the last year, we’re seeing lots of opportunity to turn Imperial’s world-class research into real-world impact, and I’m excited to see the huge breadth of challenges these new companies are working on."
Spinning out solutions
Imperial spinouts formed in the past year are working to solve pressing challenges in sustainability, healthcare and the energy transition, applying research undertaken at the university to issues that affect our daily lives.
SiftrBio, a spinout from Professor Ed Tate’s lab, is working to improve the performance of antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs) , an important emerging class of precision oncology treatments.
M-Spin, based on the work of Professor Nigel Brandon and co-founders is using ultra-porous, high surface area materials to revolutionise the performance of electrolysers, fuel cells and batteries - all vital to the energy transition.
Remephy has developed innovative phytoremediation technology that harnesses the natural symbiosis between plants and soil bacteria to efficiently extract heavy metals from land contaminated by mining, enabling it to be restored for agriculture, housing or rewilding.
NuclearMedix, emerging from Professor Eric Aboagye’s lab, specialises in developing and applying radiopharmaceuticals , and is addressing the supply shortage of SSTR-PET tracers for the diagnosis and treatment of neuroendocrine tumours.
