Global marine life is on the move due to sea temperature rises
A new study from the University of Southampton sheds light on the impact climate change is having on marine environments in a relatively recent global phenomenon known as 'tropicalisation'. In the ocean, tropical species are moving from the equator towards the poles as sea temperatures rise. Meanwhile, temperate species are receding as it gets too warm, they face increased competition for habitat, and new predators arrive on the scene, among other factors.

Emissions plans must consider risk of global warming continuing after net zero
Significant warming could still occur after the world reaches net-zero carbon emissions, warn the authors of a new study. The study, led by Imperial College London and University of Exeter researchers, suggests that high uncertainty in how the climate system will continue to react to global warming even after emissions are reduced means urgent action is imperative.

Scientists to explore why some corals can ’take the heat’
New research by the University of Southampton will investigate what allows some reef corals to thrive in exceptionally warm ocean waters, while others perish. Scientists from the University's Coral Reef Laboratory want to identify the mechanisms that allow corals in certain regions of the planet to survive at temperatures that are much warmer than those in the creatures' typical habitats.

How to bring ’ghost ponds’ back from the dead
Digging new ponds and resurrecting old "ghost ponds" can be done by landowners to revitalise biodiversity in natural and farmland landscapes, say UCL researchers in a new how-to guide for turning degraded ponds into thriving ecosystems. The manual, developed by the UCL Pond Restoration Research Group in conjunction with the Freshwater Habitats Trust and Norfolk Ponds Project, is designed to help landowners, farmers and other stewards of the land to manage existing ponds, restore degraded ponds and determine the best ways to create new ones.
