Global research projects co-designed with experts in East Africa awarded UKRI funding
From helping schools improve earthquake mitigation plans, to enabling farmers to detect fish stocks and seasonal droughts, researchers are collaborating with regional partners in a bid to deliver strategic responses to prescient challenges. Three teams from the University of Bristol have been awarded a total of 800,383 from the UK Research and Innovation Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF) , which aims to bolster innovation within the UK and developing countries by encouraging co-designed projects with practical applications that are mindful of local needs and sensitivities.

A new exhibition on James Watt has opened at the Library of Birmingham. ‘Watt in the World - The life and legacy of James Watt 1736-1819' forms the centrepiece of the Lunar Society's James Watt Bicentenary programme and will run from Friday 12 th July to Saturday 2 nd November 2019.

Prize winning research is helping to reduce electoral fraud and strengthen new democracies
A major award has been won by researchers investigating elections in newly democratic countries. The team have pioneered better ways of monitoring the risk of election manipulation and improved international interventions to counter fraudulent practices. At the ESRC's Celebrating Impact award ceremony at the Royal Society, London, on Tuesday 9 July, Professor Nic Cheeseman , on behalf of his fellow researchers, received the prize for Outstanding International Impact for work in strengthening elections and accountability.
