Network launched for research on natural disasters and political conflict
Dr Reima Ana Maglajlic, Senior Lecturer in Social Work and Social Care at Sussex, met with colleagues from social work courses, other university Departments and other countries on 2 February 2015 for the inaugural network meeting for social work research on natural disasters and political conflict (NADIPOCO).
Network members include social work colleagues from Croatia, Slovenia, Sri Lanka and Ireland.
The launch meeting was overseen by Dr. Michelle Lefevre, Head of the Department of Social Work and Social Care, and Barry Luckock, Senior Lecturer and Director of the new Centre for Social Work Innovation and Research (C-SWIR). Research carried out by the network will be undertaken as part of the centre’s ‘social crises, welfare inequality and social action’ theme.
Dr Jan Selby, Professor of International Relations, Dr John Drury, Reader in Social Psychology, and Charles Watters, Professor of Wellbeing and Social Care, contributed to the meeting, helping to develop an interdisciplinary focus for the planned collaborations.
Commenting on the network launch, Dr Maglajlic, said:
"Thanks to the University’s Research Opportunities Fund we were able to meet and launch this important research network with colleagues from other countries - an important first step towards collaboration on future joint research projects. As a result, we have created a strong foundation for the network to move forward from."
Dr Michelle Lefevre, Head of the Department of Social Work and Social Care, added:
“This is an exciting opportunity to develop a network of key researchers with a range of expertise. The network will bring together a richness of methodological expertise and theoretical perspective enabling it to lead and innovate research in this important area.”
