Postdoctoral Research Associate in trafficking within the secretory pathway

Salary (£) :  £36,024 - £44,263 per annum

Location: Department of Biochemistry, South Parks Road, Oxford

Contract type: Fixed Term Contract for up to 12 months

Hours: Full Time (37.5 hours per week) About the role We are seeking to appoint a talented structural biologist/protein biochemist (CryoEM and/or cellular imaging) to join Prof Simon Newstead’s Lab, to drive our research in understanding the molecular mechanisms underpinning cellular trafficking within the secretory pathway. The lab undertakes a multidisciplinary approach spanning structural biology, biochemistry and cell biology to address our research questions from molecular mechanism to cellular phenotype. The successful candidate will perform experiments encompassing membrane protein purifications for structure-function studies, combined with biophysical and biochemical characterisation, and cellular imaging using state-of-the art tools and resources. This post provides an outstanding training opportunity for candidates with a passion to tackle complex scientific problems with curiosity and creativity. The lab provides an inclusive environment to empower lab members to express themselves, propose novel ideas and give actionable feedback. In addition, lab members will be provided with the guidance and tools to maximise their potential to advance in both their professional and personal development.

This full-time fixed-term post is funded by the Wellcome Trust for up to 12 months in the first instance.

The actual starting salary offered will be based on qualifications and relevant skills acquired and will also be determined by the funding available.

About you

You will hold a PhD/DPhil or be near completion of a PhD/DPhil in biochemistry, biophysics, structural biology or related discipline and you will have evidence of working with eukaryotic recombinant protein expression systems and purification techniques for structural and biophysical studies.  Experience of working with challenging protein systems for structural and biochemical characterisation is essential, together with experience in X-ray crystallography and single particle cryo-EM sample preparation and the use of relevant software related to these processes.  You will have a willingness to tackle challenging projects with enthusiasm and have the ability to design and implement experiments demonstrating initiative in developing, improving, and troubleshooting experimental methods.  Excellent organisational skill and the ability to work independently and within a team is essential, as is having excellent oral and written communication skills.
