Postdoctoral Research Assistant

Department of Biology, 11a Mansfield Road, Oxford OX1 3SZ We are seeking an experienced researcher with a background in bioacoustic research and interest in ecological research in human-modified tropical landscapes. Experience in Neotropical bat and bird research is desirable.

The goal is to use state-of-the-art bioacoustic technology, machine-learning, and ecological modelling to describe changes in bat and bird assemblages in relation to livestock-associated environmental filtering, along intensive-extensive production gradients in the Amazon, Cerrado, and Atlantic rainforest biomes. This project will be integrated in an interdisciplinary assessment of the consequences of livestock production under contrasting high- vs low-yield production systems and thus will aid in tailoring livestock producing practices that contribute to the sustainability of food production, the development of One Health strategies, and the conservation of biodiversity-rich tropical ecosystems.

Your main activities will involve implementing and managing academic research activities, including coordinating multiple aspects of work to meet deadlines and desired goals. This will involve designing, overseeing, and conducting bioacoustic and machine-learning analyses, working with a wide range of researchers from different disciplines, stakeholders and project partners. You will also support team members in their activities, contribute to knowledge exchange activities and prepare manuscripts for submission to peer reviewed journals.

You will hold, or be close to completion, of a relevant PhD/DPhil, together with relevant experience. However, we would be willing to consider candidates with a relevant MSc, with the responsibilities and salary adjusted accordingly. You will have a track record in bat bioacoustic research and sufficient bioacoustic and machine-learning knowledge to lead the analyses of bat data collected in tropical landscapes. You will have previous experience of contributing to publications.

Whilst the role is a grade 7 position, we would be willing to consider candidates with potential but less experience who are seeking a development opportunity, for which an initial appointment would be at grade 6 (£32,332 - £37,099 per annum) with the responsibilities adjusted accordingly.

Where Covid-19 has resulted in substantial disruption to your work or research outputs, please explain this by providing an additional paragraph in your supporting statement.

The University of Oxford is committed to equality and valuing diversity. All applicants will be judged on merit, according to the selection criteria.

This post is full time for 15 months (although applications to work part time will be considered) and available immediately.

The closing date for applications is 12.00 noon on Monday 9 October 2023, interviews are likely to be scheduled for late October 2023. Applications for this vacancy are to be made online via our e-recruitment system, and you will be required to upload a supporting statement and CV as part of your online application.
