Research Associate - Team Leader Soil Monitoring

Soil is a precious and finite resource, the protection of which is of fundamental importance for society and especially for agriculture. Long-term soil monitoring is essential for detecting adverse developments of the soil’s state as early as possible. Within the framework of the National Soil Monitoring (NABO), Agroscope operates a measuring network for long-term soil monitoring in Switzerland on behalf of the Federal Offices for the Environment (FOEN) and Agriculture (FOAG). For the Soil Monitoring Team Leader position, we are looking for a highly motivated scientist to contribute to the research and advancement of soil monitoring at Agroscope.

About us

Agroscope is the Swiss federal centre of excellence for research in the agriculture and food sector. Its researchers carry out their work at a number of sites in Switzerland. Headquartered in Bern-Liebefeld (as of 2025: Posieux FR), Agroscope is attached to the Swiss Federal Department of Economic Affairs, Education and Research EAER.
The research group Soil Quality and Use addresses the impact of agricultural management on soil quality. An important focus of our research is soil structure and soil functioning.

Description

  • Research and project management of the National Soil Monitoring at Agroscope
  • Management of the soil monitoring team in terms of professional and organisational aspects
  • Conceptual development of the analyses of the long-term monitoring of the soil state
  • Expansion of the topic of soil monitoring through the acquisition of third-party funding
  • Knowledge transfer and public relations, including preparation of peer-reviewed publications

Requirements

  • Completed dissertation (or similar research experience) in the field of soil science, environmental science, agricultural science, ecology, or comparable research fields
  • Sound knowledge of statistics (time series analysis) and programming skills (statistical program R)
  • Experience in project management and third-party funding acquisition
  • Team player, open and achievement-oriented personality
  • Knowledge of two official languages and excellent English skills, both written and spoken
