Postdoctoral Research Associate

John Radcliffe Hospital, Headington, Oxford, OX3 9DU

An exciting opportunity has become available for a Postdoctoral Research Associate to join the Nuffield Department of Clinical Neurosciences (NDCN) to conduct a pre-clinical trial on an AAV based gene therapy for CMS in collaboration with an industrial partner. The aim of the study is to determine the pharmacology and long-term efficacy of the gene therapy and compare it with the best current therapy to see if it is significantly more efficacious. If the outcomes of this study are positive, then the data will go into a package of information that will be presented to the regulators for consideration as to whether the treatment is suitable for clinical trials.

You will work as part of a well-established, multidisciplined team that works closely with the Oxford Congenital Myasthenia Clinic and has been at the forefront of research into CMS for over 20 years. You will work in the renowned Weatherall Institute of Molecular Medicine and have access to its state of the art facilities. Your duties will include breeding and maintaining mouse models of CMS and extracting and quantifying mRNA and protein expression, as well as assessing neuromuscular junction morphology using confocal microscopy and managing the finances.

The successful candidate will have a PhD or equivalent and have a current UK or FELASA license for carrying out restricted procedures on mice. They will have experience in molecular biology techniques such as qPCR, western blotting and DNA sequencing; statistical analyses including repeat measure ANOVA and power calculations; and carrying out confocal microscopy and quantifying immunofluorescence. They will also have experience drafting and publishing peer reviewed manuscripts and have excellent organisational and communication skills. Experience carrying out strength tests and electromyography on mice, and experience with linear mixed model statistical analyses is desirable.

The post is fixed-term for 12 months in the first instance (with potential for further extension of 12 months upon milestone completion).

Only applications received before 12:00 midday on 24th October 2022 will be considered.

Interviews will be held as soon as possible thereafter.
