Postdoctoral Research Associate in Single Molecule Carbohydrate Imaging Mass Spectrometry

Department of Chemistry, Kavli Institute for Nanoscience Discover, New Biochemistry Building, Oxford, OX1 3QU Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Biophysical Chemistry to work under the supervision of Dr Weston Struwe and Professor Stephan Rauschenbach for an initial period of 12 months with the option to extend to 36 months. The project, funded by the BBSRC, centres on creating a novel method for characterising virus glycoproteins using electrospray ion bean deposition (ESIBD) mass spectrometry and single molecule imaging via scanning probe microscopy (SPM). We are looking for a highly motivated researcher with ideally with experience in molecular surface science in ultra-high vacuum (UHV), specifically molecular imaging by scanning probe microscopy and/or an in-depth understanding of biomolecular mass spectrometry.

The postholder will be part of the new Kavli Institute for NanoScience Discovery - an exciting multidisciplinary research centre comprised of research groups from several University of Oxford Departments including Chemistry, Biochemistry, Physics, Pathology, Physiology and Engineering (?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ox.ac.uk%2Fnews%2F2020-12-03-10-million-gift-new-nanoscience-institute-oxford&module=jobs&id=222540" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ox.ac.uk%2Fnews%2F2020-12-03-10-million-gift-new-nanoscience-institute-oxford&module=jobs&id=222540" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">https://www.ox.ac.uk/news/2020-12-03-10-million-gift-new-nanoscience-institute-oxford).

The successful candidate will work with the wider team in both the Struwe and Rauschenbach Groups, contribute to the development of new research areas and present their research findings at international conferences - all with an emphasis on career development and research independence. Applicants must hold a PhD in Chemistry, Biochemistry or a relevant subject area, (or be close to completion) prior to taking up your appointment.  The research requires experience in single molecule imaging, mass spectrometry and/or molecular surface science: scanning probe microscopy, UHV sample preparation, other UHV-based analytical and preparative methods. You will be expected to manage your own academic research and administrative activities. This involves small scale project management, to co-ordinate multiple aspects of work to meet deadlines.

The post will be based in the Department of Chemistry, Kavli Institute for NanoScience Discovery, New Biochemistry Building, South Parks Road, Oxford, OX1 3QU and is available from  as soon as possible.

You will be required to upload a supporting statement and CV as part of your online application.

The closing date for applications is 12.00 midday, on 22 December 2022. Interviews will be held as soon as possible thereafter.

The University of Oxford is a Bronze Athena SWAN holder and the Department of Chemistry is a Silver award holder.  Applications are particularly welcome from women and black and ethnic minority candidates, who are under-represented in Chemistry research posts in Oxford.
