Join the Diamond Scientific Computing group to develop and support cutting-edge scientific software in a Cloud native computing environment.

About Us

Diamond Light Source is one of the most advanced scientific facilities in the world. It houses the UK’s synchrotron light source, producing beams of light 10 billion times brighter than the sun, to probe the structure and composition of matter. From viruses and vaccines, to alternative energy solutions and nanotechnology, it underpins research and innovation for more than 8000 scientists.

The Diamond Scientific Computing Group provides an extensive computing infrastructure that supports Scientists in their efforts to capture experimental information, process and visualise terabytes of multidimensional data on the fly, and apply complex mathematical, fitting or theoretical models to interpret their results.

About the Role

We now have an opportunity for a talented Devops Engineer to join the Scientific Computing Group, working to support the growing use of cutting-edge scientific software deployed in a Cloud native environment. The infrastructure managed by Scientific Computing ranges from on-premises Kubernetes based platforms, to commercial public Cloud providers offering high performance computing as a service. The group also has engagement with the Ada Lovelace Center (ALC) which is an integrated, cross-disciplinary data intensive science centre for better exploitation of research carried out at Diamond and other national research facilities. This role will help Diamond make the most effective use of the ALC hardware and software.

We are looking for an enthusiastic Devops specialist to help scientists and software engineers make best use of modern development and deployment practices, such as CI/CD, monitoring, and infrastructure as code. The development of synchrotron technology proceeds at a blistering, relentless pace and requires a cutting edge and exceptionally resilient technical estate to facilitate its critical work, turning theoretical science into practical and often life-changing discoveries. The Devops Engineer will help drive this innovation forward and help exploit the use of Cloud infrastructure to enable science.

Working within a close-knit and highly skilled group, you will collaborate and have the opportunity to support and develop other team members, and the opportunity to create new projects. Your experience and underlying knowledge will permeate throughout the wider team, leading initiatives and inspiring others.

Through collaborating with similar facilities, you will help us to incorporate new methods, technologies and ways of working in a Cloud native computing environment. You well help us adopt best practice in terms of security, and will contribute to the long term future of Diamond Light Source as a world leading scientific research facility.

Successful applicants will be considered as either a Devops Engineer or Senior Devops Engineer depending on the strength of your knowledge, skills, experience and qualifications.

You will have experience in developing and deploying production quality software written in Java, Python or Golang, Exposure to configuration management and devops tooling is also essential. Solid experience with Ansible, Gitlab, and Kubernetes is highly desirable. Knowledge of Cloud APIs such as Openstack, GCP or AWS is also advantageous. Some exposure to front and back end Web APIs would also be beneficial.

Appointment at a Senior level will require a PhD or equivalent experience, a proven track record of technical excellence, an ability to supervise or mentor small teams, a sound understanding of the science domain and vision for what the role can achieve.

You will display good interpersonal, communication and presentational skills to interact effectively with staff at all levels.
