Role Description


A 2 year Research Associate post in the Department of Chemistry is available to work on the GloSAT project to extend the historical climate record back into the 18th century. Part time working over 3 years and job sharing will also be considered. You will work with Professor K Cowtan , an interdisciplinary data scientist working in fields including structural biology and climate science. The climate group is a new one, however you will benefit from contacts with the Wolfson Atmospheric Chemistry Laboratory in the same department, from proximity to the Department of Environment and Geography, and from Professor Cowtan’s network of contacts in the climate field.

You will conduct research projects, specifically to:

assess the internal consistency of single domain temperature measures developed within the GloSAT project

develop a model of temperature change across geomorphological domain boundaries and use this model to assess consistency and identify potential biases between measurement types and domains

provide tools and results to project partners to enable further improvement of data assimilation and curation and document the project in a form which enables reuse by others

assist in the identification and development of potential areas of research and development of research proposals

provide guidance to other staff and students, as well as coordinate the work of small research teams

analyse and write up research results and disseminate them through publications, seminar and conference presentations and public engagement and outreach activities

Skills, Experience & Qualification needed

A first degree in a physical science, mathematics or computing and PhD in climate science, meteorology or a data science

Knowledge and skills in computational science and a range of research techniques and methodologies including computer programming in a modern object oriented computer language, computational methods and tools, and statistical data analysis.

Ability to write-up research work for publications and to present to conferences

Ability and experience to develop research objectives and carry out individual and collaborative projects, planning and prioritising own work in order to meet deadlines

Highly motivated and professional and collaborative work ethic, committed to high quality research and a willingness to proactively support colleagues and students

Ability to work within a team environment and work independently using own initiative and with attention to detail
