We are seeking a Data manager Scientific computing officer to join the Institute (IMS-MRL) Bioinformatics and Biostatistics (Bio2) Core Facility, a scientifically complex facility pursuing (data driven) scientific research projects, (also in collaboration with Astra Zeneca and other research partners within prestigious international research institutions), and providing support to a wide range of scientists within the MRL and across the wider scientific community in Cambridge and nationally.

This position is funded for 24 months in the first instance and provides abundant opportunities to play a pivotal role in supporting the scientific programmes of the Wellcome Trust-MRC Institute of Metabolic Science.

The Data Manager Scientific Computing Officer is a member of an experienced team contributing and participating in large-scale projects and discovery efforts. The role holder will be involved in managing the data and the data analysis software and pipelines related to the analysis and integration of both -omics (metabolomics, proteomics, transcriptomics and genomics) data sets and data produced by cutting edge image acquisition technologies.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and implement the Research Data Management plans and policies for the Bio2 core and for the MRL in general

  • Provide support to the scientists within the MRL for conceiving, implementing and writing data management plans related to grant applications, also by liaising with the University of Cambridge Research Data Management Team
  • Provide consultancy and support to the Research Groups and Core Facilities within the MRL for the storage of research data, also by liaising with the University of Cambridge Information Service (UIS) and the Clinical School Computing Services (CSCS)
  • Maintain methods and pipelines for the analysis of scientific data, including multi-omics and imaging data, in cooperation with the Department’s scientists, research groups and Core Facilities.
  • Provide teaching, learning and training support: assist in the training and/or supervision of students, visitors and other staff when required; plan and deliver seminars and/or hands-on training sessions.
  • Assist in the development, implementation and maintenance of the policies and procedures including effective use of resources. Assist the Head of Bioinformatics in planning the overall resource and budget requirements for the Bio2 facility, including storage capacity, new technology and training and development needs.

  • Keep pace with the rapidly evolving area of Scientific Computing and Research Data Management in order to be able to equip the IMS-MRL with state-of-the-art solutions.
  • Liaise with colleagues within the IMS-MRL and in the broader scientific community to improve Research Data Management and Scientific Computing strategies. Build internal and external contacts and take part in networks for the exchange of information to enhance support for data management and that might lead to future collaborations.
  • The role holder is required to work collaboratively with research teams within the IMS-MRL, providing appropriate advice and guidance related to collection, analysis and storage of research data, also by liaising with the University of Cambridge Information Service and the Clinical School Computing Services

Essential Criteria:

  • MSc in Mathematics, Statistics, Engineering, Computer Science, Data Science or related fields
  • A higher degree (PhD, MSc) in Mathematics, Statistics, Engineering, Computer Science, Data Science or related fields or equivalent experience
  • Substantial experience in Research Data Management with particular reference to (multi)-omics data.
  • Experience of designing and implementing automated data analysis workflows
  • Knowledge of the main concepts of the architecture of Data Base Management Systems
  • Expert level knowledge of the programming languages commonly used in the context of Computational Biology such as GNU Bash, R, Perl or Python, Unix/Linux and Windows batch scripting
  • Deep knowledge of the peculiar features of (multi)-omics data and the related analysis workflows
