Overview:

About the Role

This role will lead the new University Digital Environment Research Institute (DERI). The duties will include developing, implementing and maintaining the overall strategy, including the research strategy, and setting the direction for the Institute. You will provide leadership to drive the research directions, impact and sustainability of the Institute.

The role will also involve harnessing the excellence of others (both internally and externally) and facilitating new approaches that bring different disciplines together creating areas of interdisciplinary research. You will also be required to build academic relations with industrial partners and agencies.

The Director element of the role is fixed term for 5 years, underpinned by a substantive, permanent, Professorial appointment. Once the Director role comes to an end, the post-holder will be expected to carry out the duties of a full Professorship including research, education, public engagement and impact and leadership and collegiality.

About You

You should have a doctoral degree or equivalent experience. Strong research expertise in any aspect of digital AI at a national and international level, including publications in internationally renowned journals is essential. You should also have a proven track record of industry leadership with academic engagement, and experience of driving multi-disciplinary work.

You will be able to engage and inspire stakeholders at all levels and be seen by regulators and senior executives/Council as being technically competent and strategically astute. You will also demonstrate a strong understanding of the part organisational culture plays in achieving excellent research bids and outputs, and will be adept at shaping others’ responses and engagement with appropriate changes.

About the School/Department/Institute/Project

The creation of the new University Digital Environment Research Institute (DERI) supports Queen Mary’s new strategy. We will bring together our research leaders from across humanities and social sciences, medicine and dentistry, and science and engineering to drive new multi-disciplinary research and increase commercial interactions with key businesses.

As this is a new Institute, there is scope to co-create particular focus areas with the highly motivated academics who form the Institute membership, though it is expected that digital health and ethics would be a strong focus from the start.
