PhD candidateship - Marie Sklodowska-Curie Early Stage Researcher in Civil Engineering: Infrastructure objects detection based on cascaded deep learning architectures enhanced with design priors

A position exists, for a PhD candidate / Marie Sklodowska-Curie Early Stage Researcher in the Department of Engineering, to work with Dr Ioannis Brilakis on the EC-funded Marie Sklodowska-Curie "CBIM" European Training Network (ETN). The aim of this project is to detect infrastructure objects based on cascaded deep learning architectures enhanced with design priors. The post holder will be located at the new Civil Engineering Building, 7a JJ Thomson Ave, CB3 0FA, Cambridgeshire, UK.

The key responsibilities and duties are to: (1) devise, implement, and test solution(s) that address the stated aim; (2) disseminate outcomes and author reports to the project’s sponsor; (3) develop research objectives and proposals for own or joint research; (4) conduct individual and collaborative research; (5) write up research work for presentation and publication.

In addition, the researcher will be expected to: (1) attend secondments at CBIM ETN industrial and academic partners; (2) attend the CBIM ETN programme training schools organised by the CBIM consortium; (3) Report to and present research methods and outcomes in management meetings and annual workshops held with CBIM industrial and academic partners; (4) plan the use of research resources, laboratories and workshops as appropriate; (5) plan and manage own research activity in collaboration with others.

The skills, qualifications and experience required to perform the role are: (1) A Master/Engineering degree and relevant background in any Engineering discipline, Computer Science or Architecture (or close to obtaining) with a high II.i Honours or international equivalent; (2) some background in conducting research; (3) good verbal and non-verbal communication skills. Work experience and experience in programming are not required but would be considered a plus. Applicants must also be willing to comply with EC’s mobility requirements for ITN ESRs, and must not have resided in the UK for more than 12 months in the last three years.

Applicants must: - at the time of recruitment by the host organisation, be in the first four years (full-time equivalent) of their research careers and not yet have been awarded a doctoral degree. - able and willing to undertake transnational mobility (i.e. move from one country to another) when taking up their appointment and when participating in secondments. - at the time of recruitment by the host organisation, researchers must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc) in the country of their host organisation for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the reference date.
