Associate Professor in Microbial Biofilms (Level 6): £51,034 - £64,145 per annum

The School of Biological Sciences is integral to cross-disciplinary research fostered by the Institute for Life Sciences at the world-leading, research-intensive University of Southampton (ranked 8th in the UK) . We have core strengths in molecular and cellular biosciences spanning interests in ecology and evolution, plants and food security, microbiology, neuroscience and developmental biology. We host the National Biofilms Innovation Centre and the Centre for Proteomic Research . We have close alliances within our own Faculty including the Schools of Ocean and Earth Sciences, Psychology, Health Sciences, Geography and Environmental Sciences and the National Oceanography Centre Southampton and with the Faculty of Medicine including the newly established Centre for Cancer Immunology . We pride ourselves on the quality of our education (1st in the Guardian League Tables 2019 and 2020 for Biological Sciences for student satisfaction within the Russell Group).

As part of our phased recruitment to five new positions, we are seeking outstanding candidates for the following position:

You will have a growing international profile in microbial biofilms in any of the following areas; health/infection, industrial, environmental. You will have an exciting opportunity to build a long-term programme linked to the National Biofilms Innovation Centre (NBIC), a BBSRC and Innovate UK-funded academic-industry hub led by the Universities of Southampton, Nottingham, Liverpool and Edinburgh, established to advance research, innovation and training in biofilms. You will have an interest in cross-disciplinary collaborations and ambitions that will build on our core strengths in molecular and cellular biosciences. You will demonstrate a passion for education and an ability to enhance our undergraduate and postgraduate curriculum in microbiology.

Strong applicants should demonstrate:

  • a PhD and postdoctoral experience in a relevant discipline
  • ability or potential to obtain peer-reviewed funding
  • evidence of distinction in research through high-quality publications
  • ability or potential for undergraduate and postgraduate teaching


This is a full time permanent post for a Lecturer or Associate Professor in Microbial Biofilms.
